چکیده

This paper considers irreversible investment in competing research projects with uncertain returns under a winner-takes-all patent system. Uncertainty takes two distinct forms: the technological success of the project is probabilistic, while the economic value of the patent to be won evolves stochastically over time. According to the theory of real options uncertainty generates an option value of delay, but with two competing firms the fear of preemption would appear to undermine this approach. In non-cooperative equilibrium two patterns of investment emerge depending on parameter values. In a preemptive leader-follower equilibrium firms invest sequentially and option values are reduced by competition. A symmetric outcome may also occur, however, in which investment is more delayed than the single-firm counterpart. Comparing this with the optimal cooperative investment pattern, investment is found to be more delayed when firms act non-cooperatively, as each holds back from investing in the fear of starting a patent race. Implications of the analysis for empirical and policy issues in R&D are considered. JEL classification numbers: C61, D81, L13, O32.

Combination of real options and game-theoretic approach in investment analysis

Investments in technology create a large amount of capital investments by major companies. Assessing such investment projects is identified as critical to the efficient assignment of resources. Viewing investment projects as real options, this paper expands a method for assessing technology investment decisions in the linkage existence of uncertainty and competition. It combines the game-theore...

Strategic Delay in a Real Options Model of R & D Competition * Helen Weeds

When an irreversible decision is taken under uncertainty there is an option value of delay. If a small number of agents are in competition each one’s ability to delay is restricted by the fear of preemption, seeming to undermine the real options approach. We present a model in which two firms may invest in competing research projects with uncertain returns. Two distinct types of equilibria aris...

Coordination of R&D Effort, Pricing, and Periodic Review Replenishment Decisions in a Green Supply Chain through a Delay in Payment Contract

This study contributes to the literature on supply chain coordination by coordinating the research and development (R&D) effort, retail price, and inventory decisions. It investigates a real case in the home appliance industry. The main purpose of this study is to examine the optimal values of R&D effort, pricing, and inventory decisions under decentralized and centralized structures. Then, a d...

Quantifying the Strategic Option Value of Technology Investments

We develop an integrated real options and industrial organization framework to quantify the strategic option value of technology investments. Strategic investments (e.g., R&D, capacity expansion or strategic acquisitions) are difficult to analyze based on standard approaches. Yet, it is these decisions that determine a firm’s competitive success in a changing technological and competitive lands...

Strategic Exercise of Real Options: Investment Decisions in Technological Systems

Viewing investment projects in new technologies as real options, this paper studies the effects of endogenous competition and asymmetric information on the strategic exercise of real options. We first develop a multi-period, game-theoretic model and show how competition leads to early exercise and aggressive investment behaviors and how competition erodes option values. We then relax the typica...
